Horses in masquerade

Behind the Mask

When SOTW began in 2013 we set out to be different from other drill teams by bringing meaning to what we do. We made a promise with a mission to “promote the western way of life through goodwill and a love for the sport of rodeo”. One of the charities dear to our hearts is the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund (JCCF). JCCF lends a helping hand to professional rodeo athletes and their families in the event of catastrophic injuries. The fund provides temporary assistance and fills the void of financial hardship when a serious injury interferes with the careers of those who have dedicated their lives to the sport.

Our friend Tim Shirley, professional bareback rider and 2009 WNFR qualifier, is just one of the many thousand rodeo athletes the JCCF has brought some financial relief to. In 2014, Tim suffered from a Watershed Stroke which left him in a coma for 5 days and in the hospital for 3 months.   In Tim’s career as a professional bareback rider he suffered from numerous concussions and his last ride left him with a broken back which required 2 back surgeries. It has been a long road to recovery but with Tim’s Faith, and determination he has made a complete recovery!

In 2016 SOTW created Horses in Masquerade to not only bring something fun and unique to the community of horse lovers, but more importantly to bring awareness to the mission of JCCF, a dedicated and generous organization that realized there was a need then created a way to meet it!
